Who said that having sensible boots is the only way to go in life? Fashion helps make ordinary things more memorable so why not add some punch to your feet especially during the tough winter months?

Quirky boots to face the day in the best of moods

We picked two current summer favorites for today's exercise in outfitology: a cropped studded vest and a black skater skirt. Making one of a kind outfits relies on choosing the perfect complements (or opposites) to an outfit core. Our first outfit core's accompaniments are all very classic and when paired with a casual denim vest and short skirt, balance and interest is created. What was fairly boring (pearls, white blouse, clutch, black heels) is now quirky and unexpected yet remains very chic.

For the second example, we chose three equally trendy pieces that portray different styles and will enhance the vest and skirt's versatility and en vogue status. However, the pale rose blouse is still an uncommon top for an edgy vest which creates contrast while the popping necklace and clutch ooze personality making the outfit trendy yet entirely new.

At times, we need to wear something to adjust to our less than stable mood. Got too many key pieces you'd like to wear at once? Can't choose only one wardrobe hit for the day? Choosing an outfit that crosses the "predictable" line is not as easy as it sounds. However, texture can be a great ally to create that element of surprise while reviving long forgotten pieces. By deciding a base palette that is naturally harmonious - in our example we went for pinkish neutrals, dashes of black and gold and a popping, surprising color such as coral or cherry red - you can mix prints and patterns in the same color range as well as combining knits with more delicate fabrics or adding metallic touches.

Texture indeed creates contrast: the more you use it, the outfit possibilities will be virtually endless.

Grey Knitted Sparkle Cape by Love Moschino; Peak Blouse Pink by MTWTFSS Weekday; Gold Sequin Collar by Asos; Stripe Full Circle Skirt by Topshop; Sonar Evening Clutch by Reiss; Gold-Tone Edgy Studded Cuff Bracelet from MiMi by Sorrelli; Two Tone Platform Court Shoe by Zara; Kara Bell Sleeve Shirt by Reiss; Napoleon Style Knit Cardigan by JShoppers; Elektra6 Jeans by Mango; Floral Print Canvas Shopper by Dorothy Perkins; Red Ringle Ballet Flats by Le Bunny Bleu; Wood & Silk Ribbon Crystal Ball Gold-Tone Necklace by Sparkling Sage.

When in doubt...make it stand out!

The Stripe Upgrade

Stripes are recurrent, easy to carry (when placed right) and irresistibly stylish. The Silk Jacket by Zara represents just that and more. A mix of rose salmon and black stripes give a subtle and elegant touch to a well-known punk-inspired trend. The understated round collar invites for a contradictory voluminous or frilly one (think bows or ruffles) from a top underneath; while the modern folds the jacket ends in complete a well-rounded 21st century look.

Coincidentally or not, a very similar fabric can be found in the Fendi dress featured in our first-ever issue. A wonderful design choice in either piece.

The Little Pocketed Dress

The little black dress with a convenient twist...

The Pocket Front Shift Dress by Zara represents the wonderful concept of the pocketed non-casual dress. As practical as can be, this slight and sometimes barely noticed addition makes any dress modern and edgier in an instant. This is a great example of how fashion design can make a statement while remaining user-centered at the same time. A little black dress to be worn with pride while tucking in your hands (or stashing a few essentials) in style.
