The best outfits don't match

 

To match or not to match? That is the question. The best part of styling an outfit is to decide whether to go matchy matchy or make it work without being obvious. 

In this example, we chose three colors as the base palette: white, nude and burgundy. Then added a few touches of black, salmon and other colors from the printed pants. But since we can't stand an obvious combination, we added a bright yellow cropped top that makes a statement while uniting the rest of the palette. It's simple: the more you try out new styling possibilities, the better your outfits will get.

Outfitology: a studded vest and a skater skirt with 2 twists

We picked two current summer favorites for today's exercise in outfitology: a cropped studded vest and a black skater skirt. Making one of a kind outfits relies on choosing the perfect complements (or opposites) to an outfit core. Our first outfit core's accompaniments are all very classic and when paired with a casual denim vest and short skirt, balance and interest is created. What was fairly boring (pearls, white blouse, clutch, black heels) is now quirky and unexpected yet remains very chic.

For the second example, we chose three equally trendy pieces that portray different styles and will enhance the vest and skirt's versatility and en vogue status. However, the pale rose blouse is still an uncommon top for an edgy vest which creates contrast while the popping necklace and clutch ooze personality making the outfit trendy yet entirely new.

Texture, richness and boldness: Translating Mulberry's runway look

The key of being inspired by fashion runways is knowing how to translate what we see and feel from them. We might want to get the exact pieces just as they are presented and dream about someday getting that gorgeous dress we fell in love with. However, runways are full of movement, color and styling which can give our wardrobe new inspiration that is even better than having the exact same outfit at hand. Learning to translate a runway look's vibe is essential and especially, understand what we loved about it. This will make the end result be true to one's style.

In this example, we chose a look from Mulberry's Fall-Winter 2013 collection that we truly loved. The rich blues, the careless yet chic attitude, the mix of textures and unexpected touches...the list goes on. The easiest would be to pick up a Navajo printed poncho or cape, add a navy blue sequin skirt, a belted oversized sweater, etc...a bit too predictable. What is most interesting is to learn to read the look's key features and make it our own. For us, what stood out beyond the particular pieces were the rich textures and color palette, the freedom of the printed poncho, the unexpected preppy shoe and sweater choice, the clashy-yet-perfect prints and materials and the overall carefree but stylish mood of the look. It can even be toned up or down, and in this case, we chose to make it an everyday staple.

Brocade goes a long way

Nothing welcomes fall better than the luscious palette and texture of a memorable jacquard brocade look. Whether you go for the unexpected playful version (left) or for the elegant upscale version (right), brocade is a beautiful way to add interest to your wardrobe. The metallic and repetitive patterns mixed in with its classic floral ways, make it a current must-have that is both opulent and daring. Include in your season's palette: nudes, taupe, browns / black, grays, gold and the color of the season: oxblood or aubergine and make it an autumn staple. Color blocking in the accessories is a great option for including additional touches of color to the mix without shifting the focus off the brocade and integrating the entire look.

When in doubt...make it stand out!

At times, we need to wear something to adjust to our less than stable mood. Got too many key pieces you'd like to wear at once? Can't choose only one wardrobe hit for the day? Choosing an outfit that crosses the "predictable" line is not as easy as it sounds. However, texture can be a great ally to create that element of surprise while reviving long forgotten pieces. By deciding a base palette that is naturally harmonious - in our example we went for pinkish neutrals, dashes of black and gold and a popping, surprising color such as coral or cherry red - you can mix prints and patterns in the same color range as well as combining knits with more delicate fabrics or adding metallic touches.

Texture indeed creates contrast: the more you use it, the outfit possibilities will be virtually endless.

Warmth: Pantone® Fall-Winter Fashion Colors 2010

The cold and tough winter months need warmth: colors that calm the soul and help us keep going forward. Pantone®'s palette is full of contrasts and features four especially warm colors: American Beauty being the most notorious of them all, is meant to be a "feel-good" color and is used to complement edgy or quirky fashion. Honey Yellow brings the sunshine in while staying subdued and fit for winter, its fashion style is classic and feminine with a vintage feel.
